This past weekend, on YouTube, I came across new footage of Carlos conducting the last two numbers from the 1992 Neujahrskonzert. It appears to be footage taken from the broadcast of the concert to Japan or Korea. It was not part of the DVD release of that concert. The video quality is quite good (but not HD), as is the audio when listened to through good-quality earphones. It appears not to have been edited.
The special treats are that (i) one gets some shots of Carlos' expressive face that I, for one, had not seen previously; (ii) one sees him fidgeting and mouthing something before launching into the "Blue Danube"; (iii) exhaling nervously before delivering the traditional "Prosit Neujahr!" greetings to the audience; and, most interestingly to me, (iv) in the "Redetzky Marsch" clip, from 00:39 to 00:44, Carlos, having switched the baton to his left hand, gives a series of lightning-quick and supple gestures with the right hand that I think you will find remarkable.
These clips suggest that Carlos was having a wonderful time conducting that concert. He seems more relaxed and happy than he usually was in concert. Note, by the way, that at the end of the concert, for the third curtain call, the orchestra refuses to rise and share in the applause and joins the audience in applauding Carlos.
I hope you enjoy watching and listening to both clips as much as I did. I've added both "An der Schoenen Blauen Donau" (1992) and "Radetzky Marsch" (1992) to the video clips section of this site.
Thanks to whoever uploaded these two clips onto YouTube. Let's hope they remain there for a long time.
