Hi,
Just confirmed with Naxos that BOTH Carlos Kleiber documentaries, "Traces to Nowhere" (Arthaus) and "I am Lost to the World" (C Major) will be released in the US on April 26.
Apparently, one can pre-order through Amazon.com or Naxosdirect.com in early April.
Cheers,
Kelly H.

Thanks, Kelly, for that very useful information.
I plan to order copies of both. I do hope that the "Carlos Kleiber: A Very Private Man" DVD has English subtitles since my German is mediocre at best and virtually the entire original DVD is in German.

I have two dvds of CK, 'I am lost to the world' and 'Traces to nowhere'. Classical Video currently rarities advertise a DVD as "NEW" Carlos Kleiber Documentary at $17.99. Can anyone tell me if I have this already by owning the other two. Is this third one 'A deeply private man' as referred to in this thread or is it yet another?
They also advertise 'Kleiber rehearses Der Rosenkavalier' as "NEW". There are currently 10 clips on You Tube taken on the pit camera focused on CK as he rehearses much of it. Is this DVD all ten joined-up and is the quality better (one imagines so).
Lastly if they come from the US, will they be playable in UK? As a new member of this forum I'd be most grateful for advice.
I will be reviewing Charles Barber's book for Music Web International when the publishers send it to me (which they have promised to do). At present I am half-way through Alexander Werner's biography.
I had a ringside seat at Covent Garden in the 80s for the final dress rehearsal of Otello. I glanced once at Domingo in the Esultate, after which my eyes were rivetted on CK for the rest.
I was a conducting student in Cologne when he came in 1972 for a concert with the WDR orchestra (Haydn, Berg and Beethoven).

Dear Conductor,
Thanks for your post and inquiry. I shall try to answer all your questions.
1. I have the CK doc that Classical Video Rarities has for sale (and has had for sale for some time [note: it's dated 2008]). It appears to be a pastiche, one that I believe was cobbled together by Austrian television (ORF) and broadcast after Carlos's death. It has a short segment of a rather slow-moving Carlos (seemingly in his late 50s or early 60s) conducting the WPO at a New Year's party in the Golden Room AND and another short segment in which a dashing younger Carlos conducts a waltz from Der Rosenkavalier at a Fasching ball. That segment lasts about 2:30. Then there is a 12:30 segment giving a superficial overview of his life and career, followed by interviews with some Viennese functionary, then with Pavarotti (talking in English about Kleiber and Van Karajan), then with Mirella Freni about her work with Kleiber.
This footage contained in this documentary is NOT a part of either of "I Am Lost to the World" or "Traces to Nowhere."
2. I believe that the "Kleiber Rehearses 'Der Rosenkavalier'" DVD is essentially the same as the 10-clips on YouTube.
3. As to whether these two DVDs would be playable in the UK, I am reluctant to venture a guess on that. However, I can tell you this: that DVD will not play on my Panasonic BluRay DVD player (which seems to play virtually anything) BUT it will play (although with difficulty) on my Apple MacBook Pro laptop.
4. If you wish to put your review of Charles Barber's book on this site, we'd be pleased to have it, or if that is not possible, at least a link to your review in Music Web International. Ditto to any review you write of Werner's book. I am currently reading Barber's book and may or may not review it here.
5. How in heaven's name did you manage to get into that dress rehearsal of OTELLO given Carlos' refusal to allow anyone but musicians and staff to attend them?! You will see that Placido comments in one of the two docs that you already have on exactly what you said about people's eyes being on Carlos.
6. I greatly envy your having had the great good fortune to have heard Carlos conduct in person. In 1976-77 I was on sabbatical in Germany and lived near Stuttgart. However, at that point I had not even heard of Carlos Kleiber. I shall forever rue the fact that I spent seven months at a place in Germany where I could easily have gotten to see him multiple times in Stuttgart and/or Munich, but never did.
If you would like to send me a private communication, my e-mail address is mcginn@Stanford.edu.
All the best,
RM

The documentary 'A deeply private man' was simply the original title of one of the DVDs you already have. I forget which...I have the CVR documentary DVD too and could play it on my player in the UK but I have a machine which will play NSTC as well as PAL so I cannot say for certain. The rehearsal DVD is as on YouTube and the quality is identical.
Speaking of the Vienna Rosenkavalier, there is an exciting addition in recent days to YouTube by one W Gerold, who has uploaded nearly all of the actual performance of 23rd March 1994 as seen from the pit camera, ie showing CK throughout. We already had that Act 3 with him in the bottom right corner of the screen but this is the full frontal, as it were, and this shows how he tackled acts 1 and 2. It is in black and white but of reasonably good quality. A treat.

Have just checked - my CVR DVDs will play on normal UK players. The documentary is short and not very good so unless you are a completist don't bother!

Also, conductor, having looked, I appear to have two copies of the Classical Video Rarities DVD (they sent me two, as I now remember) so can send you one of them as you are in the UK. Just email Mr McGinn, and he can forward to me - I hope he won't mind!

desr,
I don't mind at all. But to forward any information to you I will need your e-mail address, and as of now I don't have it and it is blocked in your profile.
Regards,
RM

Conductor,
I'm told by one member that, for some unknown reason, there may be a problem reaching me at mcginn@Stanford.edu.
The person who had the problem succeeded in sending an e-mail to me at this address:
mcginn@leland.stanford.edu
So I suggest you consider using that address.
Regards,
RM
